A Chilly And Wet Afternoon Is A First This August

Forecast

12 PM Friday August 23

A day with steady rain and cooler air is just what the doctor ordered. Well, my doctor did for my sanity, but you may disagree.  We have had a very hot August and today is the first day of a few in store that will be below average. Two full weeks (14 days) have been in the 90s so far. This includes the two record high days set on 18th and 19th.

The average temperature for the month so far is +4.6ºF. Every day this month at BWI was above average, except the 85ºF on the 13th that was 1 tick below. Today will be VERY DIFFERENT!

Noon Temperatures

The 60s spreading in this afternoon might actually feel chilly. This afternoon will be about 20 degrees cooler than a typical afternoon for the date!

Check out the contrast of a very chilly 52ºF in McHenry to 80s in Southern Maryland to the beaches.

Surface Weather

We are on the cool side of this cold front that is slowly moving through Maryland. Low Pressure in West Virginia is the read for the slow down and enhance rain. We need to wait for this to move through, and it will bring up to 1 inch of rainfall this afternoon. But dry weather with the cooler air is arriving from Canada and will be with us all weekend.

Rainfall

Despite a few strong or severe storms, Baltimore is below average for rainfall.

Much of the rain in big storms runs off almost a quickly as it falls. So a steady rain lasting much of the day is the best this for parched ground. The rain just reaching Annapolis at noon will continue to push south and east this afternoon. It will reach the beaches by evening, as the northern areas will then dry out.

Temperature Outlook

With dry air this weekend, it will be cooler. These are metro Baltimore temperatures. It will be cooler northern and western ‘burbs, with mornings in the 50s.  Give your AC units a break!
