Strawberry Moon Tonight Is Last Supermoon of 2021

Maryland Weather

Forecast

June 24 2021

This is the third month in a row with a supermoon, and it will be the last one of the year. It looked full rising last night, and may look that way tomorrow. However tonight is the official ‘Full Moon’.

This was the view of it rising in Havre de Grace, MD last night from Angela Zimnoch.

Tonight’s moon is called the Strawberry moon, the full moon in June. It can mark the last full moon of spring or first one of summer.

According to The Farmer’s Almanac, this has also been referred to as blooming moon, green corn moon, birth moon, egg laying moon, and honey moon.

The ‘honey moon’ may refer to the popular month to get married, sweetness, or actual honey. Take your pick.

Approximate difference in size in the sky

Supermoon compared to an average moon.

The size can be exaggerated at moonrise, but in the night sky the only different you may notice is the brighter illumination.

Weather:

The sky will be mostly clear across our region, so there should be easy viewing.

If you know where the sun has been rising, face that direction. This will rise a little to the right of that location on the horizon.

Elliptical Orbit

The orbit of the moon around Earth is an eclipse, rather than a circle. That shape means there are times when the two bodies are far apart (apogee) and close together (perigee).

  • The average distance is 238,900 miles
  • This Full Moon will be 224,719 miles away.

Supermoon

This real special aspect is that this will be the first of three super moons in a row. The full moon will occur while the illumination is within 90% of perigee.  That makes the moon appear larger AND brighter than average.

In contrast to a micro moon, full moon at apogee, the moon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter.

Sunshine State Of Mind

I am done with the cold and snow (for the season). I am embracing my wife’s mantra of Sunshine State of Mind.

This was designed by Shannon Berk and we will be wearing it through spring and to the beach.

Double Benefit: Proceeds will be split between our nonprofit Just In Power Kids and the development of my new weather website. That has been scheduled to be ready to launch in May.
