Warnings

Sunday Evening, April 21 2024

If you got caught up in the warm start to April and planted early, this is your reality check! It is recommended to plant AFTER Mother’s Day, and this is why….

The departing storm off the East Coast is setting us up with prime conditions to maximize the cooling:

  • After a Chilly Afternoon
  • A Clearing Sky
  • Light Winds

All that will allow temperatures in much of our region to drop into the 30s. The Frost Advisory has been expanded to parts of Central Maryland. Below is a look at the conditions and forecast temperatures for morning lows and the afternoon recovery.

Frost Advisory: Where temperatures drop into the 30s and surface icing is possible to affect sensitive plants.

Freeze Warning: Temperatures will drop below 32ºF, killing sensitive vegetation and compromising closed garden hoses.

Suggestion: Bring in the potted plants and cover any other seedlings you may have planted. Also, open any garden hoses to allow them to drain.

Frost Advisory and Freeze Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for Maryland WEST AND NORTH OF I-95.  This also includes northern Delaware, Southern Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

The Freeze Warning includes west of the Catoctin Ridge along I-81. This includes Hagerstown to Winchester and Harrisonburg.

April 21 Frost Advisory

Cloud Forecast 8 PM to 8 AM

There may be a band of clouds overnight, but the final clearing will push through early Monday morning across the advisory areas.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA

I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region.

One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky.

There has been no editor who can check my work while writing and to have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
