The snow drought is over! With the focus on Baltimore as the middle of our region and long-standing climate center for the Mid-Atlantic, there were 713 days since the last time there was 1 inch of snow on the ground at BWI airport.
The snow on Monday, January 15, in Baltimore was 4.1 inches at midnight. That was a record for the date. The final tally was 4.9 inches, which is about 25% of a typical season total. It was also nearly 25 times as much as the 0.2” we had in our record lowest snow last winter.
This storm ended up on the upper edge of expectations for many… even considered an overachiever. We can thank the Arctic Air and high ratios for putting out the fluffy snow, which resulted in many area schools getting their first closing in years!
In this report, I want to show you the snow spotter reports on the wide view map to compare to the forecast map… Then we can look at closer views and see the list of spotter reports below.
Please note: These are a compilation of reports from The National Weather Service. Some plots are old before the storm was done. Others may not represent the area or what you received. One example is near Wisp in Garrett County. My contact confirmed 6 inches of snow by Deep Creek Lake, but the spotter plots were much lower.

This was the low end I was confident in. I went 1 to 3 inches and included the +. We ended up with many in closer to 4 inches and some up around 5”.

I wish they would make the base map a darker color. I know this is hard to read, but I did my best.
Mostly 2 to 4 inches
I think this matched my call… with the higher end pushing north.

RESTATING MY MESSAGE ABOUT DYSLEXIA
I am aware there are some spelling and grammar typos and occasional other glitches. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer glitches I may miss. I have made a few public statements over the years, but if you are new here, you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out during my second year at Cornell University. It didn’t stop me from getting my meteorology degree and being the first to get the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington region. One of my professors told me that I had made it that far without knowing and to not let it be a crutch going forward. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely correct! I do miss my mistakes in my own proofreading. The autocorrect spell check on my computer sometimes does an injustice to make it worse. I also can make mistakes in forecasting. No one is perfect at predicting the future. All of the maps and information are accurate. The ‘wordy’ stuff can get sticky. There has been no editor who can check my work when I need it and have it ready to send out in a newsworthy timeline. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this site. She has taken it upon herself to edit typos when she is available. That could be AFTER you read this. I accept this and perhaps proves what you read is really from me… It’s part of my charm. #FITF
